In this episode of PEP Talk, we had the privilege of sitting down with Tiare Rose, the founder of Tiare Rose Cosmetics, to explore her entrepreneurial journey. Tiare's story is one of courage, faith, and representation, inspiring Pacific and Māori entrepreneurs to own their narrative and pursue their dreams.

Meet Tiare Rose

Tiare Rose was born and raised in Māngere East and proudly hails from Cook Islands heritage, with ties to Pukapuka, Rarotonga, and Aitutaki. As the eldest of three siblings, Tiare describes her upbringing as a "big old fruit salad" of influences, shaping her strong family values and work ethic.

The Birth of Tiare Rose Cosmetics

The idea for Tiare Rose Cosmetics began with Tiare’s personal love for simple, nourishing beauty products. As a self-described “makeup minimalist,” Tiare often relied on lip gloss and coconut oil for an effortless touch of shine. However, her search for high-quality, affordable products tailored to Māori and Pacific skin tones left her empty-handed. Inspired by this gap in the market, she took a leap of faith in July 2021, launching a line of handmade, vegan lip products.

Each product serves a dual purpose, combining skincare and cosmetics, with colors thoughtfully named after her first cousins. From neutral tones to vibrant reds, the products are designed to enhance natural beauty without compromising on quality or nourishment.

Values That Guide Her Journey

Tiare credits her faith, family, and newfound passion for fitness as the core pillars of her entrepreneurial journey. Growing up in a Christian household instilled in her the courage to take risks and challenge societal expectations. “Having strong faith gives you the confidence to step into spaces where people might not expect to see you,” she says.

Overcoming Challenges and Finding Purpose

Entrepreneurship hasn’t been without its challenges. After pausing her business in 2022 to manage other commitments, Tiare recently re-entered the market with renewed purpose. For her, the deeper goal is representation: “I want someone who looks like me to see what’s possible and believe they can do it too.”

Her commitment to serving others extends beyond her products. Tiare envisions a future where her business empowers young women through workshops on creating their own glosses and navigating the world of entrepreneurship.

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Tiare’s advice is simple yet profound:

  1. Take the Leap: Start before you’re ready. There’s no such thing as a perfect plan.

  2. Know Your ‘Why’: Building a strong foundation rooted in your values will guide your decisions and keep you grounded.

  3. Embrace Community: Entrepreneurship isn’t a solo journey. Surround yourself with supportive networks and mentors.

What’s Next for Tiare Rose Cosmetics?

Tiare is preparing to launch a new website, ensuring her products remain inclusive and accessible to a diverse audience. While markets have been her foundation, she’s also exploring collaborations and online sales to expand her reach.

Tiare’s journey exemplifies the resilience, creativity, and faith that define Pacific and Māori entrepreneurship. By paving the way, she’s not only building a brand but also creating opportunities for others to thrive.
